Selangor reports zero influenza deaths up to October 2025

Selangor confirms no influenza deaths from 2024 to EW 43/2025, with over 3,000 cases and 268 clusters reported, mostly in educational institutions.

SHAH ALAM: Selangor has recorded zero confirmed influenza deaths from 2024 through Epidemiological Week 43/2025, which concluded on 25 October.

State Public Health and Environment Committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaludin said the Selangor Health Department received reports of suspected influenza-related deaths during a recent case surge.

Determining the exact cause requires an autopsy for accurate confirmation.

“For cases where no autopsy is conducted, a thorough assessment, including clinical history and discussions at the Mortality Committee, is needed to confirm the true cause of death,” she told the State Legislative Assembly.

Jamaliah was responding to Chua Wei Kiat’s query about influenza cases and fatalities in the state.

She reported over 3,000 influenza cases involving 268 clusters during the same period.

Seventy percent of these clusters were linked to institutions, particularly educational settings.

Although influenza is not a notifiable disease under the 1988 Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control Act, the state government proactively implemented an immunisation programme.

Vaccines are provided to children under eight years old in Gombak, Petaling, Hulu Langat, and Klang.

The state government is also ramping up public awareness through Community Service Centres to promote effective healthcare practices.

The Ministry of Health has rolled out an influenza immunisation programme for its staff and senior citizens aged 60 and above.

This particularly targets those with chronic conditions like diabetes, respiratory diseases, heart disease, obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, or chronic kidney disease.

“To date, 37,000 vaccine doses have been allocated for the Influenza Immunisation Programme for the Elderly in Selangor,” Jamaliah said.

These free vaccines are available at 82 government health facilities statewide. – Bernama
