New giant pandas arrive in Malaysia, symbolising friendship with China

Giant pandas Chen Xing and Xiao Yue arrive in Malaysia, beginning a one-month quarantine before public viewing at Zoo Negara’s upgraded centre.

KUALA LUMPUR: A pair of giant pandas from China arrived safely at Kuala Lumpur International Airport tonight.

Chen Xing and Xiao Yue touched down at KLIA at 8.30 pm under Malaysia’s panda conservation programme.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability confirmed their arrival in an official statement.

The pandas will be transported to the upgraded Giant Panda Conservation Centre at Zoo Negara.

Their new home has been fully upgraded to ensure a conducive, safe and comfortable environment.

Both pandas will undergo a mandatory one-month quarantine period before public viewing.

An experienced team of veterinarians and keepers will provide close supervision during quarantine.

“The arrival of the giant pandas symbolises the integrity and enduring friendship between Malaysia and China,” the ministry stated.

Malaysia continues its International Giant Panda Conservation Cooperation Project with China through a new agreement.

The agreement was signed on April 16 during the Chinese president’s state visit to Malaysia.

This new arrangement allows Malaysia to host the younger panda pair for 10 years from 2025 to 2035.

Previously, Malaysia received giant pandas Fu Wa and Feng Yi in 2012 through similar cooperation.

Those pandas were returned to China on May 18 this year, making way for the new arrivals. – Bernama
