Malaysian feature film Her Second Act has begun its international festival journey with official selections at the Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF) and the Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest), ahead of its upcoming theatrical release.

An unexpected cycling victory disrupts the quiet stagnation of a mother’s life. As recognition unsettles the ordinary, long-suppressed dreams and silences between husband and wife begin to surface.

Sandra, a middle-aged mother, has long devoted herself to her family, quietly setting aside parts of herself that once felt alive. When she inherits her late brother’s bicycle, an impulsive ride leads to an unexpected victory. This sudden recognition begins to unsettle the stillness of her carefully ordered life.

As attention grows, the delicate balance within her marriage begins to shift. Long-suppressed dreams, disappointments and silences between Sandra and her husband rise to the surface, unsettling the roles they have long taken for granted.

Caught between family responsibility and the pull of desire, Sandra is drawn into a disorienting second act where change arrives uninvited, bringing both possibility and consequence for husband, wife and family.

Blending humour, emotional honesty and quiet introspection, the film explores themes of resilience, reinvention and the courage to begin again.

Douglas Lim trades punchlines for emotional complexity as a man struggling to keep pace with his wife’s unexpected reinvention.

The film also marks a significant milestone for its cast. Malaysian comedy actor Douglas Lim takes on his first leading dramatic feature role as Sandra’s conservative husband, delivering a performance that balances humour, sarcasm and vulnerability to shape a grounded and relatable family dynamic.

Opposite him, actress Jojo Goh undergoes a physically and emotionally demanding transformation as Sandra, learning to cycle from scratch and completing intensive training that mirrors her character’s own journey of fear and self-discovery.

Director Joey Lee Choi Kin describes the film as a story about resilience and reinvention, centred on the idea that it is never too late to begin again.

“I wanted to make a film that could laugh at life while quietly breaking your heart. Her Second Act is about the courage to begin again and the breakthrough. That is why I love the tagline, ‘She is not done yet.’ Because no matter where we are in life, there is always an exciting journey waiting to be explored,” she said.

Developed since 2022, the film has received support from FINAS, the ARRI International Support Grant for First-Time Directors, Full Circle Lab and the Shanghai International Film Festival Work-in-Progress programme before arriving on the festival stage.

Following its selections at DANAFF under the Panorama of Asian Cinema section and MIFFest under Malaysian Dispatch, Her Second Act will continue its international festival run ahead of its theatrical release.
