Passenger shares e-hailing driver’s cage installation around seat for safety

A female e-hailing driver’s cage-like safety setup has gone viral, sparking debate over driver protection, passenger safety and crime prevention.

A FEMALE e-hailing driver has triggered widespread discussion on social media after a passenger shared a video showing a metal barrier installed around her driver’s seat, highlighting growing concerns over the safety of ride-hailing drivers.

The video, posted on Threads by @_imrn.hkm, showed what appeared to be a cage-like enclosure surrounding the driver’s seat, separating the driver from passengers seated behind her.

“This is my first time in an e-hailing ride like this. This woman is so afraid that she has to lock herself in a cage to earn a living despite using her own car,” the passenger wrote.

The post quickly gained traction, with many social media users expressing sympathy for the driver and pointing to the risks faced by e-hailing drivers while working alone.

Several commenters shared personal stories involving robbery, assault and even murder cases linked to ride-hailing services.

“I understand this aunty. My friend was murdered while earning a living as an e-hailing driver,” one user wrote.

Another recalled a similar experience involving a family member.

“Can’t blame her. My father was robbed by a passenger while working as an e-hailing driver,” the user commented.

The incident has reignited conversations about driver safety, passenger verification procedures and the measures drivers feel compelled to take to protect themselves while working.

While many users supported the driver’s decision, others questioned whether the metal enclosure was the safest solution.

Some suggested that alternative barriers, such as transparent acrylic partitions, could offer protection without creating additional risks during emergencies.

“It’s better to install an acrylic barrier. With the cage, someone could still stab her with a knife or pair of scissors,” one user said.

Others pointed out that a fixed metal enclosure could potentially complicate emergency evacuations following an accident.
