Alor Setar City Council raids premises operating as school for Rohingya children

MBAS raids a premises used as a school for Rohingya children in Alor Setar, investigating misuse and unauthorised operations.

ALOR SETAR: The Alor Setar City Council (MBAS) raided an industrial premises used as a school for Rohingya children at the Shahab Perdana Commercial Complex here yesterday.

Mayor Datuk Abdul Gafar Yahya said the operation was carried out following claims on social media over the existence of a a facility allegedly used as a school for the Rohingya community.

“The raid was conducted by the MBAS Enforcement Division and the Development Planning Department to verify information and assess compliance with existing regulations.

“Investigations found that the premises had been rented out and used as a school, accommodating 26 Rohingya children living in the surrounding area,” he said in a statement today, adding that each student was charged a monthly fee of RM100.

Abdul Gafar said MBAS has recorded the details of the premises owner and tenant for further investigation and joint action with relevant agencies under their respective jurisdictions.

He said the case would be investigated for misuse of an industrial premises and referred to the Kedah Education Department over the operation of an unauthorised educational institution, as well as the Immigration Department to verify the status of the foreign nationals involved.

He added that MBAS remains committed to ensuring all premises in the city comply with approved usage conditions and relevant laws to maintain public order and protect community interests
