Five Melaka assemblymen exit state administration after opposing constitutional amendment on nominated seats.
MELAKA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) today announced that it is withdrawing its support for the Barisan Nasional (BN)-led Melaka state government.
Melaka DAP chairman Khoo Poay Tiong said five PH state assemblymen, comprising four from DAP and one from Parti Amanah Negara, will relinquish all positions held in the state administration.
He said the decision was made after they objected to the Melaka State Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026, passed today in the State Legislative Assembly, which would allow up to seven nominated assemblymen, contradicting Melaka DAP’s position.
“This means all PH-elected representatives rejected the enactment, including Allex (Seah Shoo Chin), the state exco (for Entrepreneur Development, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs).”
“Therefore, to uphold the democratic principles (practised in the House), we will exit the Melaka state administration,” he told a press conference at the Seri Negeri Complex here today.
The affected DAP assemblymen are Kesidang assemblyman Seah and Kota Laksamana assemblyman Low Chee Leong, the deputy exco for Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security.
The others are Banda Hilir assemblyman Leng Chau Yen, who serves as the deputy Exco for Women, Family and Community Development and Ayer Keroh assemblyman Kerk Chee Yee, the State Legislative Assembly deputy speaker.
Amanah’s sole representative is Bukit Katil assemblyman Adly Zahari, who holds no position in the state administration.
Khoo added that as responsible party members, assemblymen serving in the administration should not oppose motions tabled during the assembly sitting.
However, since the DAP representatives in the state government executive took a different stance, the four assemblymen are now regarded as no longer supporting the current administration.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said he has no authority to prevent PH assemblymen from resigning from their administrative posts.
He said that since BN did not form the state government in coalition with PH, the assemblymen’s resignation does not pose a problem.
“Whatever decision is made by our friends in DAP to express disagreement with this proposal and announce their withdrawal from the government, I cannot block their party’s decision.
“In terms of the majority required to form the Melaka government after the last state election, we did not form a government with any other party to sustain the administration,” he said.
Any political party or coalition must secure at least 15 seats to claim a simple majority in the 28-strong Melaka State Legislative Assembly and form the state government.
The withdrawal of support by the five PH assemblymen is not expected to affect the stability of the BN-led state government.
