Aminuddin’s Linggi gamble begins as three-cornered battle confirmed

Aminuddin, contesting under Pakatan Harapan, will face incumbent Barisan Nasional assemblyman Datuk Mohd Faizal Ramli, who is defending the Linggi state seat, and Bersatu candidate Datuk Zamri Md Said.

PORT DICKSON: Caretaker Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun is set for a three-cornered contest in the Linggi state seat after the nomination process concluded today.

Aminuddin, contesting under Pakatan Harapan (PH), will face incumbent Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblyman Datuk Mohd Faizal Ramli, who is defending the seat, and Bersatu candidate Datuk Zamri Md Said, who is contesting under the party’s own logo.

Linggi is among the closely watched contests in the Negeri Sembilan state election, with Aminuddin making a high-profile move from Sikamat, the seat he has represented since 2008, to contest a constituency currently held by BN.

Candidates had until 10am today to submit their nomination papers to the Returning Officer, with the official list of candidates announced later at the Kompleks Pentadbiran Daerah Port Dickson.

The nomination centre also oversaw the process for four other state seats within the Port Dickson parliamentary constituency — Chuah, Lukut, Bagan Pinang and Sri Tanjung.

With nominations completed, the contest now moves into a 14-day campaign period, which will run until 11.59pm on July 31, according to the Election Commission (EC).

Early voting has been set for July 28, while polling day will be held on Aug 1.

According to EC statistics, 889,490 voters are eligible to cast their ballots in the Negeri Sembilan state election, comprising 867,151 ordinary voters, 16,884 members of the armed forces and their spouses, and 5,455 police personnel and their spouses.

PH is contesting all 36 state seats, fielding 16 candidates from PKR, 11 from DAP and nine from Amanah.

BN is contesting 25 seats, comprising 16 candidates from Umno, seven from MCA and two from MIC.

Perikatan Nasional (PN) is fielding candidates in 11 constituencies, with five from PAS, one each from Gerakan and the Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP), and four from Parti Wawasan Negara (Wawasan), the coalition’s newest component party, which is making its electoral debut.

Bersatu, meanwhile, is contesting independently under its own logo and has fielded 22 candidates.

The Negeri Sembilan Legislative Assembly was dissolved on June 5 with the consent of the Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

In the 2023 state election, PH won 17 of the 36 seats, followed by BN with 14, while PN secured the remaining five.
