Mohamad Hasan , who is also Negeri Sembilan Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, will be challenged by Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Dr Azizul Hakim Mahdi.
PETALING JAYA: Deputy Umno president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan will face a straight fight to defend the Rantau state seat in the Negeri Sembilan state election.
The matter was announced by Rembau parliamentary returning officer Mohd Zamri Mohd Esa after the nomination process closed at 10am today.
Mohd Zamri said Mohamad, who is also Negeri Sembilan Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, will be challenged by Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Dr Azizul Hakim Mahdi.
“I received two nomination papers. The first was from the PH candidate at 9.03am, followed by the BN candidate at 9.09am.
“I have examined all the nomination papers and none were rejected,” he said in a brief announcement at the Rembau parliamentary nomination centre at Dewan Seri Rembau.
In the 2023 state election, Mohamad, who is also Foreign Minister, secured 16,957 votes to retain the Rantau seat after defeating Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Rozmal Malakan, who garnered 6,677 votes, giving him a majority of 10,280.
Mohamad, who is also the Member of Parliament for Rembau, has represented the Rantau state seat since 2004 and served as Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar from 2004 to 2018.
Earlier, Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi accompanied Mohamad to the nomination centre for the 16th Negeri Sembilan state election.
Rantau is one of four state constituencies under the Rembau parliamentary constituency that underwent the nomination process at Dewan Seri Rembau, alongside Kota, Chembong and Rembau.
With a straight fight confirmed, attention will now turn to whether Mohamad can retain BN’s dominance in Rantau or whether PH can make inroads by narrowing his winning margin in the upcoming election.
