Malaysian Nuclear Agency director general says nuclear security requires integrated management and international collaboration.
PUTRAJAYA: Keeping nuclear materials and facilities secure hinges on close national and international understanding, said Malaysian Nuclear Agency director general Dr Muhammad Rawi Mohamed Zin.
He said the Integrated Security Management approach will ensure that nuclear security aspects become a priority in planning, daily operations and every decision made by a nuclear organisation.
“The main focus is to ensure that every party understands their respective roles, so that efficient and integrated action can be taken in the event of any emergency or nuclear security incident.
“As an agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, the Malaysian Nuclear Agency remains committed to supporting the government’s agenda in strengthening the national nuclear security ecosystem,” he said in a statement after officiating the Integrated Nuclear Security Management workshop today.
He added that this will be achieved through human capital development, technical competency enhancement, and the forging of strategic collaborations at the international level.
The three-day workshop is organised by the United States Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration in collaboration with the Malaysian Nuclear Agency. It involves 31 participants from Malaysia, China, Mongolia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Vietnam.
Muhammad Rawi said the regional workshop demonstrates Malaysia’s resolve to strengthen international collaboration in nuclear security and enhance the expertise of professionals working in the field.
He said the workshop would also strengthen regional cooperation in capacity building, technical knowledge sharing, and the adoption of international best practices in nuclear security.
“The organisation of this workshop is aligned with the objectives of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) document INFCIRC/908, which supports efforts to mitigate insider threats to nuclear security at the international level,” he said.
He added that the workshop focuses on practical crisis management training and simulation exercises, preparing participants to systematically identify threats, evaluate risks, and respond with speed, precision and effectiveness in the event of a nuclear security incident.
He added that the workshop is part of wider efforts to advance the National Nuclear Technology Policy 2030.
