Winter storm kills four in Germany, causes travel chaos

Germany’s first major winter storm leaves four dead, multiple injured, and widespread travel disruptions due to snow and icy roads

BERLIN: Germany’s first major winter storm of the season killed at least four people and injured many others on Monday.

Snow and icy roads caused widespread accidents and travel disruptions across the country.

In Bavaria, three people died in a collision involving two trucks and a car on extremely slippery roads.

Two others were critically injured, while several more suffered moderate injuries.

A fourth fatality occurred in Baden-Württemberg when a 68-year-old man lost control on an icy road and crashed into another vehicle.

The second driver in that collision was seriously injured.

In Hesse, nine people were injured as icy roads and overnight snowfall caused dozens of crashes.

Police reported more than 30 weather-related accidents from Sunday evening into Monday morning.

Other federal states reported scattered incidents and disruptions to road and rail traffic, though most were relatively minor.

The German Weather Service warned conditions would remain challenging with icy conditions and light frost expected in the east.

Additional ice risks are forecast from central to southern regions, with snowfall expected across the Alps. – Bernama-Xinhua
