M’sian earns RM2k–RM3k, yet parents expect allowance, gadgets, and holiday money

He also highlighted the unrealistic expectations his parents have, demanding high-end gadgets and asking them to sponsor Umrah trips.

A frustrated anonymous Malaysian recently took to X to share his frustration with his parents who not only receive a monthly allowance but also insist on receiving extra money for their holidays.

“It’s not that we don’t want to help, but us siblings are scrimping and saving ourselves. We already give them a monthly allowance. Now we have to chip in for their holiday money too.”

The person added that it was fine if his siblings and him were earning RM10,000 salaries but they were earning RM2,000 to RM3,000.

“I give almost RM1,000. When I don’t give, they call me unfilial, but they don’t see that we are struggling too because everyone in their circle are well off.”

The anonymous user also highlighted the unrealistic expectations his parents have, demanding high-end gadgets and asking their children to sponsor Umrah trips.

“How do I educate my parents to save and be thrifty? Please give suggestions, oh netizens.”

The viral posts sparked a flood of comments, with many netizens empathising on the man’s situation.

“I just ignore it. I’m the type to speak straight with my parents. No means no. If the monthly budget allows me to give 200, then that’s all I give. I’m not being stingy, but for things that aren’t mandatory, I just don’t bother. Goes in one ear and out the other. Harsh? Maybe — but I do it out of love,” commented Farra Faizal.

“I have a friend like this. She’s already older but still renting, her husband doesn’t work. Their first child just graduated and just got a job and this kid is being told to buy a car, to buy a house for the parents to live in. You know a fresh graduate’s salary isn’t much, poor kid, already carrying debt at such a young age,” shared another.
