Sarawak GOF seizes RM9.9 million in untaxed goods in statewide crackdown

Sarawak’s General Operations Force seized RM9.9 million worth of untaxed cigarettes, liquor and firecrackers, arresting 58 people in a month-long operation.

KUCHING: The General Operations Force (GOF) Sarawak Brigade has confiscated untaxed goods worth RM9.9 million in a series of statewide operations.

The seizures were made under Op Taring Alpha, Op Taring Bravo and Op Taring Batas from November 26 until December 16.

GOF commander SAC Lim Bak Phai said 58 individuals were arrested during the period, comprising local men and women and foreigners aged between 16 and 74.

The largest single seizure occurred on November 26 during simultaneous raids on six premises in Miri.

That operation netted goods valued at RM2.5 million, including 4,909 cartons of cigarettes and 12,586 litres of liquor.

Police also seized two vehicles and arrested four local men and two women suspected of selling the untaxed goods.

“All arrests and seizures have been handed over to Miri district police headquarters for further action,” Lim said in a statement.

Investigations are being conducted under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.

The second-largest seizure, valued at RM1.6 million, was recorded on December 5.

Raids on seven locations across Sarawak yielded 3,644 cartons of cigarettes, 1,061.4 litres of liquor and firecrackers.

Two vehicles were also seized in connection with that operation. – Bernama
