ASEAN foreign ministers will meet in Kuala Lumpur to discuss de-escalation efforts between Cambodia and Thailand, chaired by Malaysia’s foreign minister.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will convene a special meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers to address the current situation between Cambodia and Thailand.
The meeting will be held in Kuala Lumpur on Monday and chaired by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
It follows a decision made by the prime ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand on December 11.
The Foreign Ministry said the meeting will provide a platform to exchange views on the situation.
Ministers will consider possible steps ASEAN can take to support de-escalation and a cessation of hostilities.
“The special meeting will be chaired by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan,” the ministry confirmed in a statement.
It aims to support efforts for peace and stability between the two member states and the wider region.
Wisma Putra said the meeting reflects ASEAN’s commitment to unity, solidarity, and centrality.
This commitment is in accordance with the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation.
“As ASEAN Chair, Malaysia remains firmly committed to promoting constructive dialogues in the ASEAN spirit,” the statement read.
Malaysia aims to facilitate both sides in upholding international law and good neighbourly relations.
The goal is to pursue a peaceful, just, and lasting settlement to any dispute.
