President Trump calls on DOJ to release Epstein documents, claiming they will embarrass Democrats and dismisses the case as a political hoax
WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has called on the Justice Department to release documents from the Jeffrey Epstein investigation that name Democrats.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump urged the DOJ to “embarrass” any Democrats who worked with the late financier.
“Release all of their names, embarrass them, and get back to helping our Country!” Trump said.
He characterised the ongoing document review as a “Democrat inspired Hoax” and a “Witch Hunt”.
The DOJ began releasing records last week from its investigation into Epstein, who died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking.
The latest disclosures contain numerous references to Trump, including details of flights he took on Epstein’s private jet.
Trump was once a friend of Epstein but distanced himself after his crimes became public.
The DOJ missed a December 19 legal deadline to release the files in full.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche previously blamed the delay on the need to redact the identities of Epstein’s victims.
The department has defended Trump, saying the files contain “untrue and sensationalist claims” against him.
It stated these claims were submitted to the FBI before the 2020 election, which Trump won.
“If they had a shred of credibility, they certainly would have been weaponized against President Trump already,” the department added.
Trump did not specify which Democrats he believes may be named in the files.
