Kyrgyzstan’s former president Almazbek Atambayev loses all state honours, including Hero title, following a court conviction and 11-year prison sentence.
BISHKEK: Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov has signed a decree stripping former President Almazbek Atambayev of all state awards.
The order follows a June 2025 court verdict from Bishkek’s Pervomaisky District Court.
Atambayev is to be deprived of the highest distinction, ‘Hero of the Kyrgyz Republic’, the Order of Manas II degree, the Order of Danaker, and the Danaker medal.
The statement from Japarov’s office said the original orders granting these awards have been revoked.
The decree also directs the Prosecutor General’s Office bailiff service to seize the awards and related documents.
Atambayev, who handed power to his successor after the 2017 election, has faced multiple criminal cases.
He has consistently called all accusations against him and his associates politically motivated.
In June 2025, the same district court sentenced Atambayev in absentia to 11 years and six months in prison.
This conviction related to violent clashes at his residence in 2019 and other cases.
The 2019 raid by special services to detain him resulted in 136 injuries and the death of one special forces officer.
Atambayev, who has been in Spain for medical treatment since 2023, did not return for the trial.
