Nigerian police charge driver in fatal crash involving boxer Anthony Joshua with reckless driving causing death and driving without a valid licence.
LAGOS: Nigerian police have charged the driver of a car carrying British boxer Anthony Joshua with reckless and dangerous driving causing death.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, faces additional charges of driving without a valid national licence and driving without due care, causing bodily harm and property damage.
Police spokesman Oluseyi Babaseyi said Kayode was granted bail of five million naira but remains in detention until the conditions are met.
The crash occurred on a highway linking Lagos and Ibadan when the Lexus SUV rammed into a stationary truck.
Joshua’s friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, died at the scene, while Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries.
Ghami was Joshua’s long-time strength coach and Ayodele his personal trainer, according to British media.
Preliminary investigations by the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency indicated the vehicle was speeding and had a burst tyre before the collision.
Kayode is scheduled to appear in court on January 20.
The crash happened in Sagamu in Ogun state, an area Joshua’s family hails from and which he visits regularly.
Local media reported Kayode had been part of Joshua’s team during his visits to Nigeria.
Both men were treated in Lagos hospitals after the accident and discharged on Wednesday.
Kayode was then taken into police custody in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.
A government source suggested the victims’ remains had been repatriated to the United Kingdom, with Joshua’s whereabouts unknown.
Joshua last fought in December, stopping YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in the sixth round.
He was rumoured to be lining up a fight with Tyson Fury later in 2026, which is now likely delayed.
