UK and France strike IS weapons site in Syria

British and French forces conducted a joint airstrike on an Islamic State weapons facility in Syria, targeting a remote location near Palmyra.

LONDON: The British Ministry of Defence announced it conducted a joint strike with France on an Islamic State (IS) facility in Syria.

Royal Air Force aircraft targeted an underground site near Palmyra on Saturday night.

The ministry stated the facility had likely been used by IS to store weapons and explosives.

It added the area was devoid of civilian habitation and posed no risk to civilians.

IS was territorially defeated in Syria in 2019 but maintains a presence in the country’s vast desert.

Palmyra, home to UNESCO-listed ancient ruins, was once controlled by the jihadist group.

Last month, a lone IS gunman in Palmyra killed two US soldiers and a US civilian.

US forces subsequently struck dozens of IS targets in Syria in retaliation for that attack.
