A viral Reddit post highlights safety risks faced by pedestrians crossing the Johor-Singapore Causeway without a walkway
THE Johor–Singapore Causeway, widely regarded as the busiest international border crossing in the world, has once again come under scrutiny after a viral Reddit post highlighted the lack of a proper pedestrian walkway.
A Reddit user shared a video showing the experience of crossing the Causeway on foot, captioned: “POV: The most thrilling thing in 2026 — walking back from SG to JB at 6pm.”
The footage showed several pedestrians, including the woman filming, waiting for gaps in traffic to cross the road on the bridge so they could continue walking towards the Johor Bahru checkpoint.
Vehicles were seen speeding past, making it both dangerous and difficult for pedestrians to cross safely.
“Some people choose to walk across the bridge because they don’t want to wait hours for the bus,” the user explained.
The post sparked a discussion among netizens, with one user, @Natural_Branch4296, suggesting that a dedicated pedestrian walkway could significantly reduce congestion at the checkpoints.
Others raised concerns that motorcyclists might misuse such a facility as a “smart lane” to bypass traffic jams.
However, another commenter argued that a proper walkway would be beneficial, noting that Singapore is pedestrian-friendly and that such infrastructure would be welcomed by the public while promoting a healthier lifestyle.
One user also highlighted the inconsistency in infrastructure along the route. “On the old bridge, there’s a proper walkway.
But once you reach the Johor Bahru side, the pathway disappears and merges with the motorcycle lane. There’s a concrete barrier in between — that’s where the cameraman was standing,” the user noted.
