Proposal by PAS needs to be studied first

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA, Gerakan, Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) have unanimously voiced their stand to oppose PAS' proposal to implement hudud law in Kelantan.
In a joint press conference held today at Wisma MCA, they urged all parties to prevent PAS from pushing through its proposal to implement hudud through a Private Members' Bill.
They voiced their stand following PAS announcing that it will table the Bill in Parliament to allow hudud law in Kelantan.
MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai fears that once the Bill is passed, it would most likely lead to PAS demanding amendments to the Federal Constitution to implement the law at a national level.
"If the Malaysian judicial system has two sets of criminal laws, it will trigger a constitutional imbroglio. In short, it is a road of no return," he said.
Liow added if that happened, then it will be one of the most serious constitutional crises since the independence of Malaysia.
"Such an action is a blatant disregard on the call of non-Muslims objecting the Bill. Even DAP, which has been the strongest defender of PAS, is unable to stop the implementation of hudud law," said Liow.
Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong said during the 13th general election, he said, DAP beautified PAS and defended it despite the latter's desire to establish a theocratic nation and implement hudud law.
"DAP even guaranteed that PAS will never be able to implement any theocratic law," he added.
LDP vice-president Chin Shu Ying said everyone needs to be fully aware of what happens if hudud is implemented, including the consequences.
Meanwhile, SUPP president Datuk Sri Peter Chin said although there is no plan for Sarawak to implement hudud law or any similar laws related to it, SUPP will be the first to oppose it.
All the leaders said that they would continue to safeguard the rights and interest of Malaysians, including upholding the Federal Constitution.
