`Umno supports hudud law, not hudud PAS'

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has never opposed the hudud law as long as it is being implemented according to qat'ie (a requirement that cannot be questioned), and not for PAS's political survival.
Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pix) said he holds the same view as party president Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in which he welcomes the suggestion by the Kelantan government to implement the hudud law in the state, as long as it is done based on the real Islamic law.
He, however, questioned PAS's sincerity over the issue and said the party's insistence on enforcing the law as merely a political tactic to ensure their survival.
"It means that Malays are being fooled by PAS by using the hudud law as a political tactic to regain their support, if what (DAP vice-chairman) Teresa Kok said is true," he said in a press conference at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), today.
Ahmad Zahid was commenting on Kok's statement on Tuesday that PAS's intention to implement the hudud law is to ensure that the party will not lose support of the Malays.
Kok was quoted in an online news portal as saying that PAS leaders had told its allies in Pakatan Rakyat (PR) of its problem to win back the Malay's support and that the party feels they would lose more if they continue to remain silent.
Ahmad Zahid said, based on Kok's statement, PAS is seen as insincere on the implementation of the hudud law.
"I want to stress that for a Malay-Muslim in Malaysia, it is compulsory to accept the hudud law, if it is based on Al-Quran, Hadith, Ijmak Ulama and Qiyas," he said.
Asked if the implementation of the hudud law is merely PAS's political strategies, he said Umno would study the matter in more details.
