Penang governor in IJN

    GEORGE TOWN: Penang Governor Tun Dr Abdul Rahman Abbas is presently resting at the National Heart Institute (IJN).
    Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon said Abdul Rahman has been at IJN for about a week.
    He however declined to elaborate after being asked why Abdul Rahman was not present during a tea reception to celebrate the 76th birthday of the Governor today.
    The event was organised by Yayasan Tun Sardon which also saw 36 charitable organisations from Penang receiving RM1,000 each.
    Nonetheless, Rashid said the state is proposing to extend the term for Abdul Rahman as Penang Governor for a further two years.
    "We will announce it soon, the state will let you know," he said in a press conference.
    Abdul Rahman has held the post since May 2001 and was reappointed three times, in 2005, 2009 and 2011.
    He was previously the Bertam assemblyman for four terms since 1977 and had served as a member of the State Exco under then Chief Minister Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu.
    He was appointed the Penang Legislature Speaker in 1990 for one term until 1995.
