MAS to discontinue flights to Frankfurt

FRANKFURT: Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is withdrawing from Frankfurt in the course of a network rationalisation exercise and as part of the national carrier's recovery plan.
"We regret to announce that MAS is suspending flight operations in Frankfurt. The last flight out will be on May 29," MAS Frankfurt director David Rajkumar Subramaniam said in a statement on Friday.
According to the statement, the revised network plan is in line with MAS' overall strategy to be more regionally focused, with a strong global connectivity through its OneWorld alliance and partners.
"Our challenge is to ensure (that) MAS operates and utilises its fleet at an optimum level, as well as maximise revenue on every route it flies," MAS chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said in the statement.
He highlighted that MAS today continued to operate several unprofitable and low yield routes, with little passenger flow through to other routes in the network.
Operation of these very poor performing routes only adds to MAS' worsening financial position as a network carrier, he said.
MAS expressed regret for the inconvenience caused as a result of the changes and gave an assurance that customers holding tickets to and from the affected routes would be eligible for a refund.
It also stressed that continued connectivity would be maintained through the OneWorld alliance, which offers connections to over 950 destinations across the globe from its 15 airline members. – Bernama
