Dengue cases in Penang double-up last year's record

    BUTTERWORTH: Central Seberang Perai in Penang has recorded the highest number of dengue cases in the state - 661 cases - so far.
    Penang recorded 1,726 cases between Jan 1 and May 2, compared to 640 cases for the same period in 2014.
    Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said there were six deaths reported as compared to three during the same period last year.
    "If public do not cooperate with the relevant government agencies to keep their homes and surroundings clean, then more people will become victims of the disease," he said after a walkabout at Gerbang Tuna here today.
    He said dengue can be contained with people took the initiative to destroy all aedes breeding grounds and adhered to the guidelines given by the ministry in preventing its spread.
    "We must ensure the environment is clean and free from mosquito breeding sites," he stressed.
    Meanwhile, Penang Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang has been reported to have a high fever for the past three days and fears are that he might have contracted dengue fever.
    However, the Bukit Tambun assemblyman hoped it was not dengue but just a normal flu.
