New KTM Komuter fares announced, takes effect from Dec 2

KUALA LUMPUR: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) today announced that the train fares for KTM Komuter in the Klang Valley will increase from 11 sen to 15 sen per km, an average of 36% increase, with effect from Dec 2.
KTMB president Lt Col (Rt) Sarbini Tijan said the new fare structure caters only for the Klang Valley sector, from Tanjung Malim to Sungai Gadut and Batu Caves to Port Klang.
“KTMB will increase its fare to the maximum RM7.10 per trip, an average increase of four sen per km,” Sarbini told reporters at a press conference in KL Sentral.
“The fare structure is more favourable to those who use the KTM Komuter to travel longer distances. It is government’s initiative to encourage people who live outside of the city to use the public services, particularly to travel from the suburban areas to work in the city centre,” he added.
Sarbini added that the new fare structure will cover the operating and maintenance costs that have been on the rise every year.
“The purchase of the spare parts has become increasingly expensive with the drop in the Malaysian Ringgit. KTMB has also been subject to the commercial rates of the electrical tariff over the years,” Sarbini said.
He added that the implementation of the fare is done with approval from the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) today that which was agreed by the Cabinet.
Meanwhile, Sarbini told the news conference that senior citizens and the disabled (OKU) will continue to enjoy concessions of 50% discount and children under the age of two years old will not be charged.
The new fare structure will also benefit primary, secondary, college and university students with a 50% discount.
On the other hand, Touch n Go users can enjoy a 20% discount, while weekly ticket users and monthly ticket users will be given up to 24% and 33% discount respectively.
