Nurul Izzah barred from entering Sarawak

PETALING JAYA: Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar was barred from entering Sarawak by local immigration authorities today at the Kuching airport.
Nurul, who is also PKR vice-president, called the incident at 4.10pm an abuse of power and uploaded a post about the incident on micro-blogging network Twitter before being deported back to Kuala Lumpur.
"As soon as I arrived in Kuching, I was received by immigration officers who gave me a notice of refusal of entry to Sarawak. An abuse of power!" she posted.
Nurul is now among several Opposition politicians and activists who are barred from entering the state including Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, Datuk S. Ambiga, Hishammuddin Rais, and Adam Adli.
This also comes after a controversial meeting she had had in the Philippines with self-declared Sulu Princess Jacel Kiram, which created an uproar in Sabah.
The Sabah state assembly then passed a motion condemning Nurul and Batu MP Chua Tian Chang, who was also at the meeting, from entering the state.
Jacel is the daughter of self-declared Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III, who led an armed invasion into coastal Sabah in mid-February 2013.
The government attempted to negotiate but the incident ultimately ended in armed conflict, with the Armed Forces having routed the 200 militants at the cost of 10 Malaysian lives.
The incident was part of long-standing territorial disputes between Malaysia and Philippines over the East Coast of Sabah dating back to the late 19th century.
