Police inspector gets two years' jail, fined RM200,000 for bribery
KUALA LUMPUR: A police inspector was yesterday sentenced to two years' jail and fined RM200,000 after he was found guilty of soliciting bribe of RM40,000 to release a man arrested for a drug-related offence in 2013.
Sessions Court Judge Allaudeen Ismail passed down the sentence on K. Raviindran, 34, who is currently attached to the Wangsa Maju police headquarters, after the defence failed to raise a reasonable doubt against the prosecution's case.
However, the court allowed an application by Raviindran's lawyer, Datuk Geethan Ram Vincent, for a stay of execution pending appeal to the High Court.
The Court also ordered that the bail be increased from RM15,000 to RM17,000.
Raviindran, who was then attached to the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division of Sentul Police headquarters, was charged with soliciting bribe of RM40,000 from Dhalgit Singh Mahinder Singh, 33, as an inducement to release his friend K. Manimaran, 26, who was arrested for a drug possession.
He committed the offence in Kepong here through a phone call between 8.15pm and 10.15pm on June 4, 2013.
The charge under Section 16(a)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and fine of RM10,000 or five times the value of the bribe, whichever is higher, if convicted.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Siti Syakimah Ibrahim from the MACC. – Bernama
