KUCHING: Young voters in the Batu Kawah constituency desire among others, a multi-sport and skills training centre for the area.
"Youngsters here are into sports and we would love to have a new recreation centre," said Robert Teo Yen Joon, 24, when met at Taman Desa Wira here.
He said maintenance of the existing sports facilities was also important to sustain them for a longer period.
"This matter should be given priority because infrastructure maintenance costs are lower than constructing a new building," he said.
Sufian Rahman, 20, who manages his family's business said the area's representative should make skill courses and training for the young generation a priority.
"If you notice, most companies prefer workers with particular skills; I myself would be interested in entrepreneurship courses, which I can apply in my business," he said.
Private sector worker, Dayang Nur Athirah, 23, wants her state representative to regularly go to the ground to meet and update his constituents on issues that matter to them.
"Issues affecting the people are usually serious so we being young, need a representative who can explain to us about them in a simple way that we can understand easily," she said.
The 16,991 voters in Batu Kawah are mainly Chinese. In the 2011 state election, Christina Chew Wang See of DAP defeated Barisan Nasional candidate Tan Joo Phoi by a majority of 543 votes in a straight fight.
This time around, the incumbent is challenged by BN candidate Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also SUPP president and Independent Liu Thian Leong, who is the UPP Batu Kawah former chairman. — Bernama
