PETALING JAYA: A robbery suspect was forced to surrender after his car blew both right-side tyres during a high-speed chase along the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban highway today.
Brickfields district police chief ACP Shahrul Othman Mansur said the drama unfolded at about 9.30am, when policemen on crime prevention rounds spotted a black Volkswagen Passat being driven suspiciously near Taman OUG here.
"When two policemen approached the car with their motorbikes, the suspect, together with a passenger in the car, sped off and got stuck at a traffic lights junction before the Kesas highway.
"The suspects also crashed into a few cars in their bid to beat the traffic lights," Shahrul Othman told reporters at a press conference after the incident here.
The policemen gave chase for about 3km but the suspects refused to heed orders to stop, and in desperation they rammed into the police personnel's motorbike, forcing the cops to open fire.
Eight shots were fired, with two hitting the right-side tyres.
The driver was forced to stop the car along KL-Seremban Highway opposite a petrol station.
"The 42-year-old driver was arrested on the spot while the passenger escaped. We believe they were house break-in suspects based on the break-in equipment found in the car," he said.
Police have initiated a manhunt on the escaped suspect, and the case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
