PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Bar Council is scheduled to meet the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) drafting team by end of this month on the proposed amendment to raise the quorum requirement for its annual general meetings (AGMs).
The proposal is part of the amendments to the Legal Profession Act 1976 which is scheduled to be tabled in Parliament in October.
"We are hoping to persuade them (AGC drafting team). They want the attendance to be more representative of the Bar.
"This is too general. In the AGMs, a notice will be given to all the members on the agenda. We cannot compel them to attend (when an AGM commences)," Bar president Steven Thiru told theSun today.
It was reported in an article in the Malay Mail Online last Friday that amendments to the Act include increasing the quorum requirement for the Bar's annual and extraordinary general meetings to 25% of its membership, or 4,000 members, whichever is less.

The Bar currently has approximately 17,000 members.
Currently, the quorum for the Bar's AGMs is set at 500, regardless of the number of members.
