PETALING JAYA: Media frenzy over the arrival of Kim Han-Sol, the eldest son of Kim Jong-Nam and a grandson of the former North Korean ruler Kim Jong-Il, at klia2 turned into disappointment when Han-Sol was nowhere to be seen.
Earlier, messages had been circulating on Whatsapp messaging service that Han-Sol, 22, was expected to arrive at klia2 last night from Macau on flight AK8321 which landed about 7.50pm yesterday.
Local and international press, including Korean, Japanese, and Chinese news outlets, had rushed to the airport as early as 6pm after getting wind of his arrival.
"Dear press members, this is to inform that the son of Kim Jong-Nam will be arriving at KLIA2 today on an AirAsia flight. Expected to arrive at 7.50pm," said the message that made the rounds yesterday evening.
But questions remain now over whether Han-Sol did land on Malaysian soil.
Jong-Nam, the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, was murdered at klia2 on Feb 13 when two women sprayed his face with a chemical as he was about to check into a flight to Macau.
Malaysia has refused to hand over the body to North Korea, saying it can only be released to the next-of-kin.
Jong-Nam was the unofficial heir-apparent until 2001, when he fell out of favour with the regime following a failed attempt to secretly visit Japan's Disneyland in May 2001.
Han-Sol's uncle, Kim Jong-Un, was named the heir apparent in September 2010, and succeeded Jong-Il upon the latter's death in December 2011.
Han-Sol had been accepted into Oxford University in England but cancelled his plans to attend after his father's death out of fear for his safety.
