VIDEOS of patients with back problems being treated in the most bizarre way, by having their bones 'knocked' back into place, have gone viral on Facebook.
In the videos, a man is seen using a marker and ruler to draw the outline of a patient's spinal cord and bone position, before circling the areas which need to be adjusted. He then uses a hammer and a piece of wood lined with a cloth to 'knock' the patient's bones back into place.
The videos, uploaded on the Facebook account of Md Rosdi Hasan (Ustaz Rosdi) on Feb 25, have been shared almost 40,000 times. According to the post, the procedures claim to treat slip disc and curved spine problems.
Horrified by the amount of people taken in by its claims, Dr Mahyuddin Mohamed, an orthopaedic surgeon from Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh, has warned members of the public of the dangers of the procedure.
"A slipped disc CANNOT be treated by knocking!" he wrote on Facebook and a gave list of factors to discredit the treatment.
Dr Mahyuddin stressed that the location of a slipped disc cannot be determined by the physical eye, but an MRI scan and X-ray is needed to identify the area. He added that the lines drawn on the patient's body as shown in the video are completely inaccurate.
Even worse, he explained that one wrong knock could paralyse the patient!
Meanwhile, the religious teacher behind the video, Ustaz Rosdi, challenged Dr Mahyuddin to watch the procedure himself before judging it.
He said all his patients had previously received treatment from specialists but now seek alternative treatment as they have not been healed.
Ustaz Rosdi added that none of his clients have been injured or paralysed after the procedure, while in comparison, many suffered injuries at the hands of doctors.
