PUTRAJAYA: The Higher Education Ministry is still facilitating the entry process of Malaysian students intending to further their studies in Egypt.
In a statement today, the Ministry denied certain quarters who said otherwise and misrepresented statements by the Higher Education Minister made between 2014 and last year concerning the situation in Egypt .
The ministry said the number of Malaysian students furthering their studies in Egypt had increased by 15.46% since 2001 and currently more than 11,000 Malaysian students are studying there.
Through its Education Malaysia Egypt (EME) office, the ministry said it provides various support services to Malaysian students in Egypt.
EME also plays a role in cooperating and working with Egyptian authorities to ensure that students’ welfare and related matters are properly communicated and dealt with.
Late last year, the Ministry said it had sent a high-profile delegation to Egypt to meet with leaders of higher education institutions and Malaysian students facing financial constraints.
The meetings led to the setting up of the “Malaysian Students Education Fund” which to date had disbursed more than RM 400,000 (approximately US$90,000) in assistance to Malaysians studying in Egypt.
On Feb 28, 2017, the Minister had met with the Egyptian Ambassador to Malaysia, H. E. Salah Mohi Eldin Elwassimy and during their discussion, he conveyed Malaysia’s commitment towards safeguarding the good relationship between the two nations.
