KUALA LUMPUR: Parents should change their mindset of giving nicknames to the child's private parts to avoid any miscommunication.
Protect and Save the Children (PS the Children) training and education executive Ting Pei Lim said that parents should not try to use any nicknames because it would create a negative perception if the children are to talk about it.
"Parents should use proper names so that the child could know that its not wrong to talk about it.
"Furthermore, majority of the public think its something shameful to talk about private parts but in fact it is not, it is something special to the point where no one is allowed to touch it," Ting said during the NGO's sharing session at the Citizens Against Sexual Child Abuse awareness campaign today.
Ting explained that among the reasons parents prefer nicknaming the private part is because they felt would be shameful if the child shouted it out in public.
"One way to address this is to have the parents or teachers telling the child or students the private part's proper name," she said.
She stressed that if the private parts' proper names were informed to the child then the latter would not have any problems informing the adult if they were a sexual abuse victim.
