36 receive Tun Taib busary

KUCHING: Two PhD students and two master of science students were among 36 university students who were awarded Tun Taib Yayasan Sarawak Scholarship today.
These 36 students, who are the first batch under the Tun Taib Busary, received the scholarships from Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud during a ceremony held at the Astana Sarawak here.
The two PhD students who received the scholarship were Bernard Maringgal from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), who is pursuing agriculture process engineering and Collin Tan Choon Lin from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) who is doing Computer Science (Cybersecurity).
Universiti Putra Malaysia's postgraduate students, Anysia Hedy Ujat and Thamaratul Izzah Azman, also received the scholarships for pursuing degrees in Master of Science (Plant Pathology) and Master of Science (Information System) respectively.
The other recipients are currently pursuing bachelor degrees in civil engineering and construction, commerce (accounting), chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, international trade, biotechnology, computer science and electrical from Curtin University Malaysia Sarawak, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, University College of Technology Sarawak, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Sarawak and Unimas.
Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, in his speech at the function, said in the pursuit of digital economy, Sarawak has to develop its human resource capital, especially with new discipline of knowledge.
He said Yayasan Sarawak would continue to award scholarships to eligible students irrespective of race and religious background to do studies in the country and overseas.
The post graduate studies are on new disciplines, including cyber security, information technology and agricultural engineering.
He hoped the first degree students would continue their studies to postgraduate levels whereby they could undertake research which would be beneficial to Sarawak's digital economy push. — Bernama
