Dead dugong found washed ashore in Johor

KOTA TINGGI: The carcass of a dugong was found washed ashore at Pulau Tinggi on Thursday evening.
Johor Health and Environment, Education and Information committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said the carcass was found at 5pm.
In a statement issue today, he said the carcass had been sent to the Turtle and Marine Ecosystem Centre in Rantau Abang, Terengganu for a post-mortem.
The sightings of dugong carcasses is not uncommon at the islands off Johor. Dead dugongs have been found washed ashore at Pulau Sibu, Kuala Sedili and Pulau Tinggi respectively.
The population of these marine mammals have been on the decline for some time now.
It was reported that about 40 to 50 dugongs remain in the waters off the east coast of the state in Kota Tinggi, Mersing, Pulau Sibu and Pulau Tinggi in Johor.
