Govt considering redevelopment of PPRs

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is mulling ways to introduce new laws to enable redevelopment of old People's Housing Project (PPR) units in the country.
Deputy Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Halimah Mohd Sadique said this effort is meant to provide inclusive and sustainable housing for the people.
"We have had many projects over the last 30 to 40 years. There's a flat in Johor where each house only has one room and it's about 400 to 500 sq ft. This living condition is no longer suitable for the urban population.
"So, the ministry is looking to introduce laws for it to be redeveloped. This matter is currently being studied by our legal advisers, and they suggest introducing an Act for this," Halimah said during the World Urban Forum 9 (WUF9) special session called "Housing at the Centre: A Paradigm Shift For Housing."
Halimah expects the new act to be tabled at the second session of Parliament later this year.
She stressed that the PPR redevelopment is vital to create a livable environment, as well as creating an "economic growth engine" in the housing areas.
