KUANTAN: A total of 19 toll plazas from Karak to Kuala Terengganu on the East Coast Highway 1 and 2 (LPT1 and LPT2), began operating electronically from noon today.
Anih Berhad vice-president II and toll management deputy head Ismaliza Ibrahim said all 57 lanes at nine toll plazas on the LPT1, namely Karak, Lanchang, Temerloh, Chenor, Maran, Sri Jaya, Gambang, Kuantan and Jabor, are equipped with electronic toll collection (ETC) system, either Touch 'n Go or SmartTag.
As the operator of LPT1, one of the busiest highways in the country, Anih Berhad had also placed its employees at every lane and prepared them to deal with all possibilities including road users who might be facing slight difficulties with the new system.
"LPT1 is one of the major highways connecting the East Coast with the federal capital and it will be crowded especially during school holidays and festive seasons," Ismaliza told Bernama recently.
"The implementation of the ECT is the best way to smoothen traffic flow and avoid congestion," she said.

She also added that LPT1 migration to ETC started in 2005 since the highway began its operations with 10 Touch n' Go lanes, seven SmartTag lanes, six mix mode lanes (cash and ETC) and 22 cash lanes.
"For the convenience of LPT1 users, we also provide Touch n' Go card and top up sales counters at Karak, Temerloh and Kuantan toll plazas, apart from petrol stations at Rest and Service (R&R) area in Temerloh and Gambang.
For highway user Azmi Muhammad, 45, a private company employee in Kuala Lumpur, the implementation of ETC provided a relief to Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway (KLK) and LPT1 users as it could reduce traffic congestion especially during the festive seasons.
Anih Berhad is the concessionaire for the East Coast Expressway consisting of KLK, stretching from Gombak to Karak, and LPT1 from Karak to Jabor.
LPT2 Sdn Bhd is the concessionaire for East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2) that covered the stretch from Cheneh to Kuala Terengganu and 10 toll plazas, which also implemented the ETC system today. — Bernama
