KUALA LUMPUR: Thousands of Malaysians, dreaming of a better future for the nation, flocked to all four entrances of the Istana Negara, greeting the seventh Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Exiting the palace following his inauguration, he received a rousing welcome.
As with how every important event in Malaysia begins, everyone in the crowd made their presence felt by singing Negaraku. And this time it was sung with overflowing passion.
"After 61 years, there's a change in government, and it is a new reformation that just took place in the Malaysian political landscape," said Sathyananthan Sinnapan, a lawyer.
"I feel delighted with this change. I always wanted to know how it was like in 1957 when we achieved independence," said Joshua Cunard, an IT manager who was among the crowd on this historic day.
"I wasn't there that time to know how it was but now I am here to be a part of history and I am so proud of our country."
Traffic at Jalan Duta and roads in the vicinity of the palace were choked with traffic as Malaysians took the opportunity to participate in this monumental event.
