IPOH: The Matang sub-district has been declared as a rabies-infected area effective Monday by the Perak state government after a recent case of a rabid dog was reported in Kuala Sepetang.
Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir, in signing the declaration, said the measure was to contain the spread of the disease.
The measure was taken after a dog owner reported that his daughter and niece were bitten by the dog which died eight days later, with the Veterinary Services Department later confirming that the dead animal tested positive for the rabies virus.
This led to authorities vaccinating all pets within a 1km radius of the incident in Kuala Sepetang.
Zambry said people in the Matang sub-district would be forbidden from taking their dogs out until further notice, with the state taking steps to contain the virus.
He, however, noted that the case was an isolated one.
