RM10k Sleeping Buddha idol stolen while devotees pray (Video)

    GEORGE TOWN: A Sleeping Buddha statue worth RM10,000 was stolen from the Penang Buddhist Association at Jalan Anson near here while several devotees were offering their prayers.
    Northeast district police chief ACP Anuar Omar today said one of the devotees alerted the temple staff that the foot-long white marble statue was missing from the altar at the main prayer hall on Dec 20.
    On checking the close circuit television (CCTV) at the temple, the association secretary discovered that a couple had stolen it.
    "The CCTV recording shows a couple behaving suspiciously, taking the statue and putting it in the bag before fleeing in a Myvi car," he said in a statement today.
    The association secretary the lodged a police report on Dec 20.
    Anuar said from the recording of the CCTV, the incident happened on Dec 11 between 8pm to 8.30pm.
    However no other devotees were aware of the theft.
    Police are looking for the couple and the case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code.
