KOTA KINABALU: About 25% of the capacity of the 1Malaysia People's Cable System (SKR1M) has been used by broadband users in Sabah and Sarawak since last June.
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Tan Sri Dr Halim Shafie said the 3,800km submarine cable has a capacity of up to four terabytes (TB) per second, but the use in the two states only requires one TB per second.
"However, as more people discover the benefits of using the internet, the use of this SKR1M capacity will be fully utilised.
"For your information, the four TB capacity can be further upgraded to 12 TB which may be implemented in the next three to five years," he told reporters after the launch of the cable system, here.
The inauguration was officiated by Sabah Human Resource Development and Information Technology Minister Datuk Siringan Gubat, representing Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.
According to Halim, the system developed by MCMC with Telekom Malaysia Bhd since 2014 cost RM619 million. — Bernama
