ALOR SETAR: Syarikat Air Darul Aman Sdn Bhd (SADA) is prepared to distribute 2.2 million litres of water daily if a water crisis occurs during the festive season.
Its chief executive officer, Datuk Abd Ghani Zainuddin said the amount was double following detailed preparations carried out by SADA based on past year's experience.
"This year, we are better prepared with 127 lorries as SADA has identified a total of 257 drought-affected villages.
"While the operation of transporting water using lorries will begin at 8am and end at midnight, we will provide round-the-clock service for seven days during Aidilfitri if the situation worsens," he said when met by reporters after a briefing on the final preparations to tackle water shortage during the festival here today.
Also present was state housing, local government, water supply, water resources and energy committee chairman, Datuk Badrul Hisham Hashim.
State Secretary Datuk Bakar Din who chaired the briefing session said he was satisfied with the water supply contingency preparations by all parties, including Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and the Fire and Rescue Department during Hari Raya.
"It is just that we are disappointed with the Pokok Sena plant which is expected to be completed this year, but is still not operational as planned.
If it begins operation, the water supply woes in Pokok Sena and Kota Setar will be resolved.
"The five other water treatment plant projects in Pelubang, Bukit Selambau (Merbok), Sungai Limau (Baling), Lubuk Buntar Lama and Jenun Baru (Yan and Pendang) are still at the evaluation stage," he said.
Meanwhile, Badrol Hisham clarified that a water disruption contingency plan briefing would also be given to opposition elected representatives.
"The issue is related to the people and we want all parties to be informed that efforts are made to ensure the people are not burdened with basic amenity problems during the festival," he said. — Bernama
