SIMUNJAN, SARAWAK: The 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games Torch Run in Sarawak which reached Samarahan today saw the run cover a distance of 20km involving three stages.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin in his speech said the Torch Run was aimed at raising the awareness level and spirit of the games among Malaysians since Malaysia will be hosting the 2017 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games in August and September respectively.
"Though the SEA Games will be held in Kuala Lumpur, support for the games is important from all Malaysians, from Arau, Perlis to Tawau, Sabah because we want to rise together," he said.
The first stage in Samarahan saw Khairy together with 350 Armed Forces personnel carrying the Torch across the 1.48km Batang Sadong bridge, the longest bridge in the state.
Upon crossing the bridge, the second stage started with Khairy leading a 29 high powered motorcycle convoy to Simunjan while the third stage saw the Youth and Sports Minister join children with special needs and 150 Armed Forces personnel to Padang Sental in Simunjan.
The torch was later handed to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri who is also the Batang Sadong Member of Parliament.
