Sipadan kidnapper caught with grenade
PETALING JAYA: Philippines police have arrested an Abu Sayyaf terrorist who was part of the raiding party that kidnapped 21 people from a resort in Sipadan, Sabah, in 2000.
Zamboanga City Police Officer-in-Charge Diomarie Albarico said Abdulmubin Salahuddin was nabbed at 10.45pm on Thursday.
The Philippine SunStar news portal reported that Abdulmubin was working as a security guard at a shopping mall.
Police seized a sling bag that contained a grenade.
Albarico said Salahuddin was involved in the kidnapping of 10 Europeans and 11 Asians on April 23, 2000, in Sipadan.
The incident was the first kidnapping staged by the Abu Sayyaf outside the Philippines.
The bandits herded the hostages to Sulu and released them in batches following payments of ransom.
Albarico said Salahuddin was believed to be supplying firearms and ammunition to the Abu Sayyaf group based in Sulu, the report said.
