GEORGE TOWN: Sungai Pinang incumbent Lim Siew Khim from DAP is facing a tough battle with a six-cornered fight after getting an easy passage in the last general election.
In the last federal polls in 2013, Lim won with a 4,707 majority against Thor Teong Ghee from Barisan Nasional (BN) and Mohamed Yacoob Mohamed Noor, an Independent.
However, this time Lim can expect a tough battle with five other candidates eyeing the mixed-urban constituency seat located at the heart of the town.
The state seat which comes under Jelutong parliamentary has been held by DAP's Koid Teng Guan before Lim was elected in 2013.
Lim, who rose from Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor to become assemblywoman in the previous term, is said to be popular among the constituents in Sungai Pinang.
She is facing her former colleague Teh Yee Cheu, who is contesting under Parti Socialis Malaysia (PSM) after a fall-out with DAP.
Teh has been vocal on environmental issues. She has been hitting the campaign trail with a focus on flooding and traffic issues.
Ng Fook On from BN is also no stranger to the constituency as he was formerly the Batu Lanchang assemblyman from 2004 to 2008 before the seat was won by incumbent Danny Law Heng Kiang.
The senior candidate from BN told theSun that the multi-cornered fight would affect BN and PH as both sides were expected to lose some of their votes to other parties.
"Both parties will be affected," he said, adding that traffic, parking and high-density would be the main issues to be debated.
