Motorists bypass seatbelt alarms for comfort, raising safety risks and potential insurance issues after crashes
WHILE dashcams may be encouraging more responsible driving, a troubling trend is emerging among some motorists who are choosing personal comfort over basic safety aided by technology designed to bypass vehicle security systems.
The issue gained traction following a recent Reddit discussion initiated by user Billy_Butcher139, who highlighted the growing use of “seatbelt silencers”.
These small devices are designed to plug into seatbelt buckles to stop warning alarms from sounding when a passenger remains unfastened.
According to the user, one of his close friends regularly uses such a device, citing physical discomfort as the primary reason.
The user claimed his friend, who is overweight, finds seatbelts restrictive and complained that the friction frequently damages his clothing.
“That’s like saying the shirt is worth more than their life.
“There is literally no good reason not to wear a seatbelt. I really cannot fathom this type of thinking,” the user wrote.
The post also detailed a harrowing incident involving another acquaintance who consistently avoided buckling up.
Following a collision, both the individual and his girlfriend were thrown forward, smashing their faces against the dashboard.
Despite the severity of the injuries, the user pointed out that the experience only prompted a temporary change in behaviour before the acquaintance reverted to his old habits.
Other contributors shared similar concerns regarding the logic used to justify the lack of safety. One user, Drunk-Foxy1738, recounted how a friend dismissed seatbelts entirely, claiming his fate rested in divine hands.
When questioned, the friend reportedly said: “If it was God’s will for me to die in a car accident, then so be it. If he does not want me to die, I will survive with or without a seatbelt.”
Commenters were quick to challenge this fatalistic perspective. User iammisselle pointed out that death is not the only outcome of an accident, warning that life-altering injuries—including limb loss or traumatic brain damage are very real possibilities for those who are unrestrained.
Beyond the physical dangers, the discussion highlighted significant financial risks. User Xingixn warned that insurance claims could be severely jeopardised if it is discovered that a seatbelt was not in use at the time of an accident.
Another user, Crazy-Plate3097, claimed that even the mere presence of a silencer could cause complications: “Insurance agents will immediately make you unable to claim insurance if they find one in your car, even if you are not using it during the accident.”
