Couple loses RM522k after falling prey to organic egg scam

IN this day and age, most of us have purchased something online and successfully got it. Many others, however, are not so fortunate.

According to CNA, a couple who recently ordered organic eggs online were victims of a fraud, losing more than SGD 150,000 (roughly RM522,198.98) from their funds.

Singh, 57, told CNA that his wife came across a Facebook ad selling organic eggs.

The fraudster, masquerading as a vendor called Jason, chatted with them over WhatsApp after they clicked to place an order.

Scammers invited Singh to deposit money via an app and provided a URL.

Singh then attempted to purchase 60 eggs after installing the app, but the procedure directed him to a payment screen that resembled that of a bank.

After, he attempted to log in using his password, but it did not work.

The next day, Singh received a call from a bank customer care agent, who advised him of a large credit card transaction.

They discovered that the fraudsters had taken their whole savings after inspecting their bank accounts.

Additionally, Singh stated that he had no idea how the thieves obtained his credit card and other financial information.

He further emphasized that he received no transfer alerts and no one-time password for transaction confirmation.

The banks concerned have admitted that they are aware of the matter and are in contact with the impacted couple.

As of now, Singapore Police stated that they received a report from the Singhs and are presently examining the situation.
