Loud alarms and smoke triggered an evacuation at Mid Valley Megamall, forcing shoppers to flee as shops shut
MID VALLEY Megamall visitors were thrown into panic tonight after loud fire alarms and smoke prompted an emergency evacuation of the popular shopping complex.
Several netizens took to Threads to share videos of the incident, showing shops hastily closing as shoppers rushed to exit the mall.
One clip posted by @ainaas.atelier captured crowds moving quickly towards the exits, with the user audibly distressed as she said she had only planned to step out for dinner.
“There’s a food (court) area at a level below that which has caught fire — not sure which outlet. The whole of Mid Valley is filled with smoke, even reaching the car park.” she alleged.
Smoke reportedly spread throughout the mall, reaching even the car park.
In a subsequent video, she described the situation as “scary” while stuck in her car attempting to leave the parking area, where traffic crawled amid the blaring fire alarms.
Another video shared by @rra_norar showed customers trapped inside an electrical and furniture shop after its shutters were closed, with those inside appearing confused and unsure of what was happening.
As of the time of writing, the cause of the incident remains unknown, and no official statement has yet been issued by the fire and rescue department.
