WORLD number 118 Jimmy Wong-Cheng Su Yin pulled off a massive upset at the Japan Open 2026 today after stunning the world number 14 pair to secure a spot in the second round, today.
Jimmy-Su Yin who are in mixed doubles national team dispatched the host nation’s representatives, Yuichi Shimogami-Sayaka Hobara, 21-19, 11-21, 21-19 in a grueling one-hour battle in the first round.
The Malaysians, however, face another daunting task in the next round as they are set to challenge sixth seeds Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue of France for the first time.
Also safely through were senior professionals Goh Soon Huat-Lai Shevon Jemie, who took just 33 minutes to brush aside USA’s Zhi Yi Chen-Francesca Corbett 21-13, 22-20.
While the victory marked the independent pair’s second win in as many meetings against the Americans, a monumental challenge awaits them as they prepare for their 12th career showdown against China’s duo, Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin.
The husband-and-wife pair will be looking to beat the odds in the second round, having only tasted victory once in their previous 11 encounters against the Chinese pair.
Meanwhile, it was the end of the road for national women’s singles shuttler K. Letshanaa who struggled to break through South Korea’s Kim Ga Eun and eventually fell 16-21, 12-21 in a match that lasted 32 minutes.
