‘Should I leave my wife?’ Man slammed for linking marriage to financial compatibility

A man’s viral Threads post questioning whether to leave his wife over income gaps sparks backlash, with users defending loyalty over money.

A man’s candid confession about his marriage has gone viral on Threads after he questioned whether he should remain with his wife despite describing her as loyal, caring and supportive.

In the post, the man said he and his wife have been married for five years and that she has consistently stood by him throughout their relationship.

“She’s a good person, a green flag and very loyal. Sometimes when I’m sick, she’ll even leave work and come home just to make me a hot cup of tea (her workplace is close to our house),” he wrote.

However, he said his concern stemmed from financial differences after receiving a salary increase of more than RM5,000 this year, while his wife’s income remained at RM1,800 since the start of their marriage.

“She hasn’t really made any effort to earn extra income, like taking up sewing jobs or side gigs.

“So, should I continue with this marriage? Or should I leave her and find someone who’s more on my level financially? Someone with a similar income?” he added.

The post triggered widespread backlash online, with many netizens expressing disbelief that he would consider ending a marriage over income despite acknowledging his wife’s loyalty and care.

Many argued that qualities such as faithfulness, kindness and emotional support outweigh financial considerations in a long-term relationship.

Others criticised what they viewed as a materialistic mindset, saying the man appeared to be measuring his wife’s value based on earning capacity rather than her contributions to the relationship.

“My dad earns a five-figure salary and my mom is a housewife with no income. They’ve been married for 31 years and doing just fine. Never once has my dad told my mom to start sewing or take on side gigs to make extra pocket money,” user enolbutanol wrote.

“She is a green flag, you’re the red flag bro,” kucingletih commented.

“Your question doesn’t even make sense. What do you mean ‘compatible’? You just got a RM5,000 salary increase and you’re already talking about compatibility. You’re ungrateful. Your wife deserves better,” muizz_mueh added.
